Wayne Morse Chair for Law and Politics For 26 years, the Wayne Morse Chair for Law and Politics has been given to distinguished scholars and activists who embody the qualities and traditions associated with Wayne Morse. Morse Chair Professors give a major public address, teach courses, meet with students and community groups, and participate in various other relevant public and private events. Dale Jamieson will lead the Morse Center’s inquiry on Climate Ethics and Climate Equity during 2009-10. Jamieson is Director of Environmental Studies at New York University, where he is also Professor of Environmental Studies and Philosophy, and Affiliated Professor of Law. Formerly he was Henry R. Luce Professor in Human Dimensions of Global Change at Carleton College, and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Jamieson's books Ethics and the Environment (Cambridge, 2008) and Morality's Progress: Essays on Humans, Other Animals, and the Rest of Nature (Oxford, 2002), are recognized as standard texts in environmental ethics. He has edited several books, including A Companion to Environmental Philosophy (Blackwell, 2001), and Singer and his Critics (Blackwell, 1999), named by Choice as one of the outstanding academic books of 1999. He has published more than eighty articles and book chapters in such journals as Analysis, Environmental Ethics, Environmental Values, Ethics, Global Environmental Change, Climatic Change, Risk Analysis, Science, Technology and Human Values, and Philosophical Studies. He is the co-author of a major report to the US Environmental Protection Agency, Cultural Barriers to Behavioral Change: General Recommendations and Resources for State Pollution Prevention Programs. His research has been funded by the Ethics and Values Studies Program of the National Science Foundation, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Office of Global Programs in the National Atmospheric and Aeronautics Administration. Dale Jamieson will be in residence at the Department of Philosophy and Environmental Studies Program during fall quarter, 2009. He will teach a seminar on Climate Change Law and deliver public addresses in Eugene on November 3 and in Portland on November 17, 2009. See Upcoming Events for more information. 2010-2011 Morse Chair Occupants Maxine Burkett will visit the School of Law during fall semester, 2010. Burkett is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii and inaugural director of the Island Climate Center: Center for Climate Adaptation and Policy, dedicated to helping islands adapt to climate change. Burkett’s work focuses on climate justice, the disparate impact of climate change on poor and of-color communities and our moral and legal obligation to these communities. She will teach a law class on environmental justice in early fall, 2010. Please read Maxine Burkett's CV here. (120K PDF). Dr. Vandana Shiva will visit the UO during winter term, 2011. She is a scientist and activist on issues of agriculture and food, bioethics, globalization, gender, and the worldwide impacts of climate change. Dr. Shiva is the Founder and Director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology, and Ecology, Navdanya.
